Teaching Philosophy

Distance learning via DVD and Internet video lessons are great but you do not get the interactivity and one to one personal attention that is needed when you are setting out. One to One lessons are easily the quickest way to improve. How quickly you improve depends on how much work you put in. If would expect most of my students to put in about 30 minutes a day, with many putting in over an hour. If you want a career in music, then clear the decks, quit your dayjob and start doing at least four hours a day. My approach to teaching is to help you develop a well rounded practice routine. After all you have a great deal of time between lessons to practice and it is important that you use your time wisely. I also pay strong attention to improving your mechanical and rhythmical ability, your co-ordination and creativity.

Learning

The aim is to have fun and to learn in a structured form so that you learn and progress towards your own goals at a pace that suits your lifestyle. The aim is to get you confident to play with a band and to be a guitarist with your own style and imagination rather than just a covers copycat.

Apart from my time, all my teaching aids, hand outs, cds and backing tracks are all included in the cost for my students, there are no hidden extras. I can also offer you a whole range of RGT books at a discount from the standard price. For beginners I use the Sombrero Media package for beginners. This is a revolutionary new set of tools that will ensure that beginners go from zero to (not quite!) hero rapidly. My experience as a teacher has seen the need to use a set of clear and simple instructions and tools to get beginners off the ground.I will correct hand positions and technique and help you through the learning journey, saving you from practicing bad habits or developing new ones.

We will address basics of theory as well as chords,scales and arpeggios in line with the recognised RGT syllabus but also try out examples in the style of music you like to practice. It always makes practice more fun when you are playing things you want to play. I do encourage every student to learn some basic music theory, develop a solid basic technique, to learn to play songs all the way through and understand all the basic musical concepts like rhythm and harmony.
